Across the Strait and Over the Rimutakas

Up at 6am, packing things into the van and eating our prepared breakfast.  At 7am, we were at the Bluebridge check in and then waited half an hour before boarding.  It was a chilly 3C but wasn’t raining.  A well managed operation getting on board and nice comfortable seats with a good view.  Fullers and Sealink could pick up a few pointers from this lot.

The ferry trip was very pleasant.  Jim managed to get forty winks and Lynette raced around taking photos.  It was quite a calm crossing.

We met up with most of the Reed tribe for lunch in Petone.  That was very pleasant and a rare event outside of weddings or funerals.  After that it was on to Upper Hutt to juice up before the Rimutaka hill.  We left Upper Hutt with 90% battery and arrived at the Rimutaka peak with 59% left, having covered 17 km.  On the downhill side we regenerated some energy and ended up in Featherston with 64% battery.  That was a gain of five percent for traveling 13km.

Then it was on to Masterton to wash off the salt spray that we had collected on the ferry and out to our evening stop, where the temperature was not far off the night’s minimum of -2C.  A roaring fire helped ward off the cool air.

A Couple of Photos from the Marlborough Sounds
